Lyra review: Killing of a brilliant young woman – The Irish Times Lyra review: Killing of a brilliant young woman – The Irish Times

a b c d e Picheta, Rob (19 April 2019). "She dedicated herself to covering Northern Ireland. Murdered investigative journalist 'tirelessly pursued the truth' ". CNN. Archived from the original on 19 April 2019 . Retrieved 19 April 2019. One of the best Irish books I have ever read. So thought-provoking and informative, and still very relative in 2023 even though some essays are 10 years old. Thousands turned out for the ecumenical funeral in St. Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast. They included the former British Prime Minister Theresa May, the Irish Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, and the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins. The two young women of the band Saint Sister sang “Dreams” by the Cranberries. Nichola spoke of the brave and gentle soul of her lost sister, “our wee brainbox.” Stephen Lusty, an engineer who’d helped Lyra with her tech skills and become a close friend, talked about her name’s origin in Greek mythology: the constellation of Lyra had been named after the lyre of Orpheus, which was thrown into the River Hebrus after the singer was killed. Lyra’s friend Father Martin Magill commended the politicians for going to Derry but said that he was left with a question: “Why, in God’s name, does it take the death of a twenty-nine-year-old woman with her whole life in front of her?” We began to clap. A powerful wave of clapping surged through the cathedral and got us to our feet. The choir led the singing of “Amazing Grace” as journalists filed out to form a guard of honor. He said senior members of the UUP had harboured suspicions about Bradford's murder. "I worked with Enoch Powell as his constituency agent and later as personal adviser to the party leader Jim Molyneaux," he said.Later, I discovered a document in Bradford’s inquest file, retrieved from the Public Records Office in Belfast. It was a letter authorising the release of contents from his Westminster office – yet it was dated 10 days after his murder. Ms Calder added: "Excalibur Press will be donating our commission to our not-for-profit entity The Merlin Project, where we hope to run a series of events, workshops and potentially courses for young reporters wanting to learn some of the practical aspects of the industry.

Because the following night, she was shot dead in Derry. One day, I met with Jeffrey Donaldson, a former UUP stalwart who'd worked closely with Jim Molyneaux who had later moved to the Democratic Unionist Party and was now the MP for Lagan Valley. He made an interesting claim. Our Lyra. A loss that our family and friends will never get over, she is a friend to all that she met, the stories and her hard hitting questions she asked and fought hard to get the truth. We can keep her memory alive in keeping to ask those difficult questions.

I got this book for Christmas in 2019, read about a quarter of it then abandoned it. Took it to Manchester with me two years later and read the remainder in August of 2022. She didn't see Northern Ireland through a nationalist or unionist gaze, she saw it with the eyes of her generation: the ceasefire babies, and through the experience of living in the North as a lesbian journalist. She was highly critical of the divisive nature of Northern politics and the influence of religion and yet she was always conciliatory, ready to bring about the change she was longing for. Northern Ireland needed her, but she was taken too soon. Just a short time before her death, Lyra had approved her cover and sent the final changes for her book, she should have been holding it in her hand at the end of April. For others, the past was just more interesting than the present. Northern Ireland’s current news cycle had become so predictable, you could guess what outrage would be dominating the headlines six months in advance. Yet the past was full of mysteries that could not be explained. Of interest in particular, of course, to the amateur detectives was Kincora.
